New Delhi, Nov 6 (NationPress) Following the retention of only one uncapped batter and former U19 World Cup champion Shweta Sehrawat ahead of WPL 2026, UP Warriorz (UPW) head coach Abhishek Nayar expressed the franchise's commitment to embarking on a new journey. The upcoming mega auction scheduled for November 27 in New Delhi presents a pivotal opportunity for this transformation.
As one of the original teams in the WPL, UPW has faced challenges in achieving consistent performance. After making it to the playoffs in the inaugural season of 2023, they were unable to qualify the following year and finished last in the 2025 season.
In an effort to alter their course, the franchise appointed Nayar as head coach. Aside from retaining Sehrawat for Rs 50 lakh, they have made significant decisions to part ways with prominent players, including India's top allrounder Deepti Sharma, who was named Player of the Tournament during the 2025 ODI World Cup. Other notable departures include Alyssa Healy, Sophie Ecclestone, Alana King, Tahlia McGrath, and Kranti Gaud.
“The UP Warriorz have been home to some exceptional talent in previous seasons, but as we enter a new phase in the WPL, a fresh beginning is necessary. This decision does not eliminate the possibility of our players returning, and we are developing a new strategy. We are optimistic that the WPL Mega Auction will facilitate the restructuring of our squad to better serve the UP Warriorz,” Nayar stated on Thursday.
The franchise will approach the auction with a budget of Rs 14.5 crore and has four Right to Match (RTM) cards at their disposal, which may allow them to regain key players from their 2025 lineup. With a healthy budget, UPW is anticipated to be an active participant in the mega auction.
“This decision signifies a new beginning for us as we gear up for the upcoming season. The extent of our budget and the Right to Match mechanism equips us to strategize effectively, giving our head coach, Abhishek Nayar, the flexibility to assemble the most suitable team to contend for the title,” said Kshemal Waingankar, UPW COO.
