New York, Sep 2 (NationPress) Amanda Anisimova has advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open by defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Anisimova started strong, breaking Haddad Maia in the opening game and quickly taking control of the match. Her powerful serves and precise two-handed backhands kept Haddad Maia on the defensive throughout the match.
The second set saw a bit more resistance, as Anisimova faced challenges in her pursuit of her best-ever performance at the US Open.
Once again, Haddad Maia was broken at the start, but she managed to secure a break of her own after losing seven consecutive games. However, Anisimova responded by breaking back immediately, saving a break point in the fourth game, and despite Haddad Maia’s determination, closed out the match with another break in the final game.
With her victory over Haddad Maia, Anisimova improved her Grand Slam record to 42-22 and raised her seasonal best record to 35-14.
Next, she will face the No. 2 seed, Swiatek, in the quarterfinals, marking their second encounter, with Anisimova seeking to avenge her loss in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Earlier, Naomi Osaka defeated Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2, marking her return to the Grand Slam quarterfinals for the first time since 2021.
It’s worth noting that every time Osaka has advanced to this stage in a major tournament previously, she has gone on to win the title.
The four-time Grand Slam champion is set to meet No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova from Czechia, who reached the quarterfinals after defeating No. 27 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, 6-3, 6-7(0), 6-3.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez continued their impressive run by defeating the No. 12 seeds, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the 2025 US Open.
This marks Williams' 22nd appearance at this stage in doubles at a major tournament, and her first major quarterfinal since 2017. The last time she reached this stage in Flushing Meadows was in 2014, and she has won the title here twice, in 1999 and 2009, alongside her sister, Serena.
Williams and Fernandez will next challenge the top seeds, Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, for a chance to enter the semifinals.
