Bengaluru, July 4 (NationPress) Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Varun Kumar views his inclusion in the India 'A' squad as a significant opportunity to rejoin the senior national team, after being absent for more than a year.
"Not being part of the Paris Olympics was a tough blow. I was in the running for a spot, but I have chosen to move forward and embrace this chance to represent India 'A'," said the talented defender and dragflicker, who had previously shone at the Junior World Cup in 2016.
Varun last donned the Indian jersey during a friendly against Germany in New Delhi last year. His recent call-up to the India 'A' squad right before the prestigious Asia Cup in August suggests a promising path back to the senior lineup.
"Of course, my ultimate aim is to return to the senior team. However, my current focus is on enhancing my skills. It has been more than a year and a half since I participated in a proper tournament, and the game is evolving rapidly. The dynamics have shifted and the pace has increased. I am approaching this as a fresh start," Varun elaborated.
The India 'A' squad, under the captaincy of Sanjay, is scheduled to play two matches against Ireland, France, and the Netherlands, as well as one match each against England and Belgium. The matches will commence on July 8 in Eindhoven and Amstelveen in the Netherlands, with the match against Belgium taking place in Antwerp.
"The journey back into the core probable group has been challenging for me. Over the past 7-8 months, I have dedicated myself to improving my fitness, and the mental aspect has been equally tough. Regaining form has not come easy, but I am grateful to my family, teammates, and coaching staff for their unwavering support and motivation during difficult times," Varun stated.
On his personal aspirations, Varun added, "We have been putting in a lot of effort in the camp for the past two months, and I believe this is an excellent opportunity for players to challenge themselves against some of the world's best teams. Competing against European teams, who are gearing up for the Euro Cup, will be exciting and a valuable learning experience for me. A strong performance here will certainly count, especially with the Asia Cup approaching in India."
The India 'A' squad departs for Amsterdam tonight from Bengaluru.
