Birmingham, April 6 (NationPress) Aston Villa secured a 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest, significantly boosting their chances of clinching a top-four spot in the Premier League.
The home team was the stronger side in the opening half at Villa Park, taking the lead with Morgan Rogers netting his 13th goal of the season just 13 minutes in.
Two minutes later, they extended their lead when Ian Maatsen delivered a cross for Donyell Malen to score his inaugural goal at B6.
Forest showed improvement after the interval and managed to score through Jota Silva’s deflected shot in the 57th minute.
Despite facing some tense moments, Villa remained resolute in the final stages, securing all three points and moving up to sixth place in the standings while maintaining an unbeaten record at home for 17 matches.
"We began the match with great authority. They employed a tactical medium-low block, and we capitalized because they were not applying high pressure and failed to engage. We created several opportunities and found the back of the net," said Villa coach Unai Emery.
With this win, Villa ascends to sixth place, tied on points with Manchester City, who are set to face Manchester United on Sunday, while Forest remains in third place, missing the chance to narrow the gap on Arsenal.
"Our start was poor; we lacked organization and failed to close down spaces. Villa exploited us numerous times during the first half," commented Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo. "We were far more competitive in the second half, posing challenges for Aston Villa and displaying greater dominance."
