Perth, Nov 20 (NationPress) England's head coach Brendon McCullum asserts that his squad is ready for the upcoming Ashes series, which could be a pivotal moment for them.
Since he took the reins in 2022, McCullum, alongside captain Ben Stokes, has revitalized the England Test team. The former New Zealand captain expressed that the English players have been 'preparing for this moment' as they approach the inaugural Test in Perth, set to commence on Friday.
“There’s nothing more significant than what lies ahead. This squad has been united for a considerable time, and we have been gearing up for this moment. It represents the largest platform and the most brilliant lights. This series has the potential to define teams, individuals, and players involved. That’s perfectly fine. You need to be confident in your readiness, knowing that you possess the capabilities to compete at this level. Stay united, play the style you’ve adopted, and we’ll see where we stand in a couple of months,” McCullum shared with BBC Sport.
The England squad is expected to finalize their playing XI for the first Test on Thursday, with Shoaib Bashir likely to be omitted from the 12-player lineup revealed on Wednesday. This implies that the visitors will likely employ a five-man pace attack, possibly the quickest they have ever fielded in a Test.
“I’m incredibly excited and probably a bit more at ease now than I was a few weeks ago. We’ve successfully brought our team to the starting line. I feel like our horse is poised to perform well. Whether we encounter an even faster horse in the race, who can say,” he added.
Since McCullum and Stokes' arrival in 2022, they have transformed England's game approach. They formed a new squad featuring several young talents and achieved remarkable series victories at home against New Zealand and South Africa, in addition to wins against the Kiwis and Pakistan.
However, England has yet to clinch a victory in a notable five-Test series against either Australia or India, including a 2-2 stalemate in the last Ashes series held on home turf in 2023. The last time England celebrated a Test victory in Australia was during their series win there 14 years ago.
“For this team, it will signify the progress we’ve made. For Stokesy to lead an England team to an Ashes victory away from home would be monumental. We recognize the significance of this, but it’s essential to stay present and tackle what comes our way. We will face challenges on this tour. There will be good days and bad days. As long as we keep striving towards our goal, we will give ourselves the best opportunity,” McCullum stated.
England's 12-man squad for the first Test includes: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir.
Australia's XI for the first Test comprises: Usman Khawaja, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (captain), Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett.
