"This is fantastic news for all wrestling enthusiasts. We are set to hold wrestling trials on March 15 in Delhi," stated Sanjay Singh as he spoke to IANS.

The Ministry lifted its suspension of the WFI on Tuesday, enabling the organization to conduct domestic competitions and select national teams for international contests.

According to the letter from the ministry, signed by Director (Sports) Bangararaju V.V.K.K. Thatavarthi, it stated: "In light of the Spot Verification Committee's findings, the compliance measures taken by the WFI, and for the broader benefit of Indian sports and athletes, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has hereby rescinded the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which was ordered on 24.12.2023, and reinstated its D recognition as the National Sports Federation (NSF) for wrestling with immediate effect..."

The suspension was imposed on the newly elected WFI body led by Sanjay Singh just three days after the elections, following the announcement to hold U15 and U20 national championships. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was instructed to form a temporary committee to supervise the WFI's operations.

On December 21, 2023, the day Singh became the WFI president, he revealed plans to conduct national trials for wrestling in the U-15 and U-20 categories in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh.

After the suspension, the IOA established an Ad Hoc committee to manage the daily operations of the WFI.

The ministry's letter also outlined directives for running the federations.

“The WFI is required to revert the amendments made during the suspension period and ensure an equitable distribution of power among the designated office bearers, providing checks and balances in the decision-making process, which should be completed within 4 weeks.

“Any individual not elected as an office bearer, including suspended or terminated salaried officials of the WFI, must be completely disassociated from the Federation and its affiliated units. The WFI's Executive Committee must submit an undertaking regarding this within 4 weeks. Any breach of this undertaking will result in appropriate legal actions, including actions under the Sports Code.

“The WFI must guarantee that selections for all international events are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, adhering to the current provisions of the Sports Code and other recent instructions issued in this context, along with regulations from the UWW," the letter concluded.
