Perth, Nov 12 (NationPress) Captain Ben Stokes has indicated that England is contemplating the inclusion of the pace duo Jofra Archer and Mark Wood in the playing XI for the inaugural Ashes Test in Perth, aiming to deal a significant early blow to Australia’s batting lineup.
England arrives in Australia fully fit and equipped with a formidable pace attack, featuring Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, Archer, and Wood, all eager to showcase their skills in the upcoming warm-up match against England Lions starting Thursday.
Due to injuries, Archer and Wood have never shared the field in a Test match against Australia, yet both have delivered memorable performances in past Ashes encounters.
Wood played a pivotal role in turning the tide of the 2023 series in England's favor, while Archer engaged in a memorable duel with Steve Smith without dismissing the Australian star.
The prospect of utilizing Archer and Wood together, both reaching speeds exceeding 150 km/h, has Stokes contemplating the optimal deployment of his talented pace bowlers ahead of the five-match ICC World Test Championship series.
"It's fantastic to have the X-factor that Joff and Woody bring with their pace. Woody has successfully recovered from his knee surgery and is looking exceptionally fit. Joff has been active for two and a half years, and it’s thrilling to see both of them delivering fast balls. Whether they will be selected for the first Test remains uncertain," Stokes remarked in Perth on Wednesday.
When asked about the possibility of fielding Archer and Wood together in Perth, Stokes remained non-committal.
"It would certainly be exciting, wouldn’t it?" he responded with a grin. With just nine days until the first Test, there is ample time for plans to solidify or change.
"Currently, from a fast bowling perspective, the players we’ve selected are all in excellent shape," he added.
