New Delhi, Nov 8 (NationPress) Former Australian cricketer Merv Hughes has expressed doubts regarding Mark Wood and Jofra Archer’s capability to remain fit throughout the critical Ashes series starting on November 21 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
With less than two weeks to go until this highly awaited Test series kicks off, worries have surfaced about the fitness levels of Archer and Wood, particularly given their limited experience bowling in Australia. Having already made their way to Perth, both players are expected to lead England’s bowling attack against a formidable Australian batting lineup.
Hughes, who took 75 of his 212 Test wickets against England, raised questions about whether the fast-bowling duo can endure the rigors of five Tests.
“It’s a wait and see isn’t it? Because it’s such a compact series, you would think it’d be unlikely. The concerning factor for England is the amount of cricket that Wood and Archer have played in the past two years, especially when considering that Australia’s pitches are significantly tougher and more demanding on the body. If they’re not match-ready, pushing them could prove detrimental to their fitness,” Hughes stated in an interview with Code Sports.
Wood stands out as the only member of England's bowling lineup with Test experience in Australia, though injuries have hampered his career. The 35-year-old last participated in a five-day Test back in August 2024, when he faced Sri Lanka.
The cricketer from Durham has spent the majority of this year recovering from a knee injury, and he told reporters on Friday that he will need to assess his fitness for playing all five Tests over five days.
“Last time we were here I managed to play four out of five, which I was thrilled about. We have strong depth in our bowling lineup, so we’re prepared if someone is unable to play,” he remarked.
Similarly, Archer has also faced setbacks due to injuries, missing the last two Ashes series. Furthermore, none of the 15 Tests he has participated in have been held in Australia.
In case Wood and Archer cannot participate, potential replacements include Josh Tongue or Brydon Carse, along with Gus Atkinson.
