London, July 31 (NationPress) Former captain Nasser Hussain asserts that Chris Woakes will play a crucial role in England’s bowling effectiveness on a green pitch during the fifth Test against India at The Oval. England's decision to bowl first means Woakes will get the initial opportunity to bowl in overcast skies and damp conditions.
To date, Woakes, who leads England’s pace attack, has claimed 10 wickets in four matches of this series, which the home team currently leads 2-1.
“It’s great to see Atkinson back as he contributes to both batting and bowling, but I believe Woakes is the pivotal player. He may wake up feeling stiff and sore from playing all four Tests, but upon seeing the pitch, he knows he must seize this opportunity after waiting two months for conditions like these,” Hussain commented during a Sky Sports broadcast.
A right shoulder injury has sidelined regular captain Ben Stokes from participating in the fifth Test. Stokes has taken 17 wickets in this series, arguably making him the best bowler on either side.
“Ben Stokes is irreplaceable. Few players can deliver in a series-clinching situation like he can. Winning the toss was significant. A player like Chris Woakes will be eager to take advantage of the new ball,” remarked former England women’s cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent on BBC Test Match Special.
Ex-captain Michael Atherton speculated that Stokes’ absence may be due to insufficient recovery time between Tests in this series: “Stokes is the most vital player in this team, not just for his superb leadership but also because he is performing as a top-notch all-rounder once again.”
“The series has been condensed into six weeks, and now Stokes, Bumrah, and Archer are absent, which poses a challenge for fans who have invested in tickets. They want to witness the best possible XIs. Injuries are inherent in the sport, but a lack of recovery time is concerning,” he added.
