London, Aug 4 (NationPress) Injured all-rounder Chris Woakes will be ready to bat on the final day of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy decider at The Oval, despite suffering from a shoulder injury, should England require his assistance as they approach a series-clinching victory.
Woakes sustained a suspected dislocated shoulder while fielding on the first day of the match and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the game.
However, with England needing just 35 runs for victory on the final day, Woakes is prepared to step in at No.11 if called upon.
He practiced some throwdowns in the indoor nets at The Oval on Sunday and donned his whites, anticipating the possibility of batting as England reached 339/6 at stumps in pursuit of 374 runs for victory.
“He’s all-in, like the rest of us,” Root, who achieved his 39th Test century earlier in the day, remarked about Woakes.
“It’s been that kind of series, where players have had to put their bodies on the line. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that. But he had some throwdowns, and he’s ready if needed. He’s determined to do whatever it takes,” he added.
England has not disclosed the full extent of Woakes' injury, although Root indicated that the 36-year-old is still experiencing significant pain.
“Clearly, he’s in a considerable amount of pain following his efforts. It’s a testament to his character, willing to sacrifice his body for England,” Root said. “We’ve seen similar commitment from other players in this series, such as (Rishabh) Pant batting with a broken foot. It’s a huge deal for him.”
“Hopefully, he won’t need to bat, but if it comes to that, he could help us secure an incredible series win,” Root concluded.
