New Delhi, Sep 26 (NationPress) As the countdown to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 commences, former captain Meg Lanning has shared her favored Australia XI to launch their title defense against New Zealand on October 1 in Indore.

In a discussion on The ICC Review, Lanning elaborated on her selections and the tough decisions Alyssa Healy faces as they gear up for this trans-Tasman showdown.

For the opening pair, she advocated for a mix of seasoned talent and youthful vigor with Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield. “I believe this batting duo has demonstrated that they are a dynamic partnership at the top,” she remarked.

The middle order features familiar faces like Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ash Gardner, Annabel Sutherland, and Tahlia McGrath. “This batting lineup essentially manages itself with Perry and Mooney, complemented by Gardner, Sutherland, and McGrath,” Lanning added.

Mooney’s dual role as a potential wicketkeeper enhances the team's depth. “This combination ensures a robust all-round balance for Australia, with Mooney also capable of stepping in behind the stumps if necessary,” Lanning commented.

However, she acknowledged that the bowling selection is where the real challenge lies. “The pivotal task will be deciding on the bowlers and the type of lineup they wish to adopt,” she explained.

Lanning noted the available options, stating, “We have Darcie Brown, who brings more pace and could be more effective on certain wickets. Additionally, there are two leg spinners, Alana King and Georgia Wareham, who have been part of this ongoing series against India and have performed well in the past, although not as frequently lately.”

Ultimately, Lanning indicated that the conditions in Indore will influence the final decisions. “The conditions will significantly impact our choices. If there’s a lot of spin, we might consider playing an extra spinner; however, if there's enough support for the pace bowlers, then we could include Brown and Kim Garth. This is the dilemma that the Australians will need to navigate,” she remarked.

Lanning also cautioned that New Zealand will present a formidable challenge in the opening match. Coming off their victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the White Ferns will be striving for a historic double.

“They’ve proven their capabilities on the big stage. I recall that whenever I faced them in series or World Cup matches, it was always a significant encounter due to their dangerous players and match winners who have extensive experience,” she concluded.
