New Delhi, Sep 26 (NationPress) Trent Copeland, the former Australian fast bowler and current general manager of Sydney Thunder, has praised the arrival of Ravichandran Ashwin in the Big Bash League, deeming it the most significant signing in BBL history.

Ashwin, a renowned Indian off-spinner with 765 wickets across all formats of international cricket, is poised to join the Thunder for the upcoming BBL season following his participation in the UAE's ILT20, which concludes on January 5, 2026.

“This is the biggest signing in BBL's history. It sends a clear message to our fans, members, and sponsors that we are capturing these pivotal moments. All eight teams were vying for this player. Ashwin has picked us, which is a remarkable story,” Copeland shared with the media on Friday.

Ashwin, now 39, will make history as the first international Indian cricketer to participate in the BBL, marking a milestone for the Australian T20 league. Copeland also mentioned that the club will need to enhance security protocols this season in light of Ashwin's signing.

“We will need to boost security. With Babar Azam also joining us, it’s going to be an extraordinary tournament. I hope this will serve as a catalyst for retired players and present an opportunity this summer, putting us at the forefront of that movement. Ashwin will be an excellent ambassador for our tournament and the Thunder environment,” he remarked.

When questioned about whether Ashwin would receive any special treatment while with the Thunder, Copeland replied, “The Thunder has a history with that (as seen with Chris Gayle). I recall during his time here, he was accommodated in a luxurious penthouse.”

“However, that was when I was a player in the tournament, not in my current role as general manager overseeing the budget. Our aim is to ensure that he and every overseas player enjoy their time here. We will take care of them, that’s a guarantee.”

Ashwin’s historic signing comes at a crucial juncture, as discussions regarding the privatization of the BBL are intensifying. “I believe we are not a flawed product, irrespective of Ashwin's involvement or otherwise.”

“What I do believe is that the public is beginning to recognize that top players, like Babar Azam and Ravi Ashwin, are eager to participate in this tournament,” concluded Copeland.
