New Delhi, Sep 25 (NationPress) The renowned Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin has made a groundbreaking move by signing with Sydney Thunder for BBL 15, marking the largest overseas acquisition since the league commenced.
At 39 years old, this off-spinner is now the first male cricketer from India to participate in the BBL. Although Indian women have been part of various international leagues, including the WBBL, the BCCI has historically barred contracted male cricketers from competing in foreign T20 leagues, limiting participation to retired players only.
“The Thunder were transparent about their plans for me and had the courage to support it. My discussions with the leadership were outstanding, and we are completely aligned on my role. I admire how Dave Warner approaches the game, and it’s always more enjoyable when your captain shares your vision. I am eager to contribute to the Thunder Nation,” Ashwin stated.
The 39-year-old will join the Thunder in early January and is set to play in several key matches, including the Thunder's match against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on January 10, a showdown with the Melbourne Renegades at Engie Stadium (January 12), and the Sydney Smash at the SCG (January 16).
Ashwin, who concluded his international career during last summer's Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, also announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League last month.
In his tenure with India, Ashwin participated in 287 matches, claiming 765 international wickets, including 537 at the Test level, placing him eighth among all-time bowlers in that format. He is a winner of the Cricket World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013) with India, the ICC’s Cricketer and Test Cricketer of the Year for 2016, and a member of the 2011-20 Men’s Test Team of the Decade.
Throughout 16 IPL seasons, Ashwin appeared in 221 matches across five franchises, ranking seventh in overall appearances. He is a two-time IPL champion with the Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011, and has accumulated 187 wickets in the tournament, putting him fifth in its history.
“I am immensely proud that Ashwin has chosen to join Sydney Thunder. From our initial conversation, Ashwin impressed everyone with his enthusiasm, ambition to win, and understanding of what makes our club unique. He will inject fresh energy and world-class bowling mid-season, while his leadership will be invaluable for our younger players,” said Trent Copeland, general manager of Sydney Thunder.
“What’s even more thrilling is Ashwin’s connection with the fast-growing Indian community in Western Sydney, which will inspire a new wave of supporters to join the Thunder Nation,” Copeland added.
The Thunder will kick off their BBL 15 season with a grand final rematch against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 16, followed by hosting the Sydney Smash at ENGIE Stadium on December 20.
