Sydney, Jan 23 (NationPress) Former Australian opener David Warner has officially signed a one-year extension with Sydney Thunder, the Big Bash League (BBL) club confirmed on Friday.

After guiding the Thunder to the BBL Final last season, Warner's squad faced a tough season in BBL 15, finishing at the bottom of the table with only two wins to their name.

Despite being sidelined for two matches due to injury, the 39-year-old concluded BBL 15 as the league's top run-scorer with 433 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 154. His impressive performance also earned him a second consecutive selection for the Team of the Tournament, where he was again named captain.

The former Australian Test opener has accumulated 1,139 BBL career runs and is eager to enhance that figure in the upcoming season.

“I’m thrilled to commit to another season with Thunder,” Warner remarked.

“This past year was definitely challenging for us; we are a much stronger team than what we showcased this season and struggled to maintain consistency. However, the support from our fans—showing up in great numbers for every match—was a significant factor in my decision to stay,” Warner stated in a message shared by Thunder's management.

“I believe I have much more to contribute to this team and to this sport. I felt quite satisfied with my performance and was proud to provide the team with a competitive chance. We’ve already started evaluating the past season and are putting plans in place to ensure we present a much more formidable campaign in BBL 16,” he added.

Thunder's General Manager Trent Copeland expressed that extending Warner's contract was an obvious choice after another stellar season.

“We are delighted that Davey is continuing with us for another season. He has had an outstanding year; not only is he one of the greatest T20 players in the last 15 years, but he remains one of the top batters in the BBL, and his fitness levels are exceptional.

“His desire and commitment as a leader to improve after a disappointing season for the team is stronger than ever,” he added.

In related news, Melbourne Stars have re-signed experienced players Hilton Cartwright, Sam Harper, and Peter Siddle for BBL 16.

Cartwright and Harper have both secured two-year contract extensions with the Stars, while Siddle is set for at least one more season in green.

Harper’s new deal follows a career-best season, where he secured the BBL Player of the Tournament award.

Alongside Harper, Siddle was also included in the BBL Team of the Tournament, acknowledging the 41-year-old’s remarkable performance with the ball.
