Sydney, Aug 19 (NationPress) Australia’s rising cricket sensation Sam Konstas has officially secured a four-year contract extension (including BBL 15), ensuring his stay with Sydney Thunder until at least the conclusion of Big Bash League (BBL) 18, as announced by the club on Tuesday.
At the youthful age of 19, Konstas has already made waves with a record-setting Big Bash debut, earned a medal as an Under-19 World Cup champion, and claimed his maiden Baggy Green during last summer’s Border-Gavaskar series.
His debut for Thunder last season was nothing less than extraordinary, as he smashed 56 runs off 27 balls, establishing a new club record for the fastest half-century and becoming the youngest player in BBL history to achieve this feat.
Reflecting on the new deal, Konstas expressed that it feels just as surreal as his initial contract.
"I recall being a fan in the stands, cheering for my heroes like Davey Warner, Michael Hussey, and Andre Russell playing for Thunder, so extending my time for another four seasons is incredibly exciting," Konstas stated.
"Batting alongside Davey Warner last season was an invaluable learning experience for me, as he is very strategic in his approach. I felt a sense of clarity and freedom to express my game.
"We have an exciting lineup again, now featuring Shadab Khan... I genuinely believe this is our year to shine," he added.
Sydney Thunder’s general manager, Trent Copeland, remarked that Konstas’ dedication is a significant indicator of the club’s future.
“This contract extension was one of the simplest decisions we’ve made. A year ago, he hadn’t played a BBL match, and now he’s breaking records on debut – showcasing his growth across various formats,” Copeland explained.
“This deal is monumental in terms of its duration, and we envision it as part of a journey that will hopefully see him become a Thunder player for life.
“This extension not only recognizes Sam’s development and his lifelong passion for the club, but it also sends a message to our fans that when we identify talent, we will do everything in our power to keep them in Thunder colors,” Copeland concluded.
