New Delhi, Aug 17 (NationPress) Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has provided clarification regarding his previous statements suggesting that the five-time IPL champions might have offered more than the official amount to sign South African sensation Dewald Brevis. This follows a statement released by CSK concerning Brevis' replacement signing in IPL 2025.
Earlier this week on his YouTube channel, Ashwin had mentioned that when Brevis was set to join as a replacement, he was expected to be signed at the base price but was compensated with an additional amount for participating in IPL 2025.
“Let me share something. Regarding Brevis, he had a remarkable IPL season with CSK. In fact, multiple teams were interested in him. However, some teams withdrew due to the price. Initially, he was to join as a replacement at the base price. But as discussions progressed, player agents might say, 'If you offer me X extra, I'll join,'” Ashwin remarked.
However, CSK clarified on Saturday that Brevis' signing adhered strictly to IPL regulations and that he was not offered more than the official amount stated in the advisory from April 18. Brevis joined CSK for Rs 2.2 crore to replace the injured fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh.
“Chennai Super Kings firmly clarifies that all actions taken during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player for IPL 2025 were fully compliant with IPL rules,” CSK stated on Saturday.
Responding to CSK's statement, Ashwin noted that the franchise provided clarification due to widespread doubts regarding Brevis's signing cost.
“We live in a time where even true scenarios require clarification. It’s a complex situation. However, I won’t delve into it further. No one is at fault here. The need for clarification arose from public uncertainty. The player isn’t at fault, nor is the franchise, and possibly the governing body is also not at fault.
“It’s essential to recognize that if a franchise requires a player, they communicate with the player or his agent and inform the BCCI, ‘We need a replacement for our injured player.’ The matter concludes there,” Ashwin explained on his YouTube channel.
“My intention in that video was to highlight how well Brevis was performing. It’s crucial to understand that every IPL player operates under a tri-partite contract involving the player, the franchise, and the IPL. If something is amiss, it won’t be ratified. That’s why the tweet referencing a specific clause makes complete sense. The flexibility within the IPL’s injury replacement system is widely utilized.
“It’s not just CSK that has secured replacements; several other teams have done so as well. RCB previously brought in Chris Gayle, who became a sensation. Injury replacements are a standard aspect of the IPL, and how teams navigate this flexibility within the rules is important,” he added.
Dewald Brevis, who joined mid-season, accumulated 225 runs across six innings in IPL 2025 for CSK, who finished in the tenth position on the points table.
