WPL 2026: Have the Gujarat Giants Yet to Showcase Their Best Cricket?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vadodara, Jan 30 (NationPress) Georgia Wareham, the leg-spin all-rounder for the Gujarat Giants, emphasized that her team has not yet reached their peak performance in the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL), despite recent strong showings. She noted that both the batting and bowling departments still have considerable potential to improve.
“Honestly, across the board, I believe we can enhance our game. We've made a solid start in the powerplay with the bat in our last few matches. Sophie (Devine) has been exceptional at the top for us. However, we haven’t quite managed to finish our innings strongly,” she stated.
“The same applies to our bowling; we’ve allowed a few opportunities to slip away towards the end of the innings. In truth, it could be a bit of everything. We still haven’t played our best cricket,” she added.
“Not having a specific total in mind actually gives us some freedom with the bat. It opens up all possibilities, and we’ve defended well with the ball,” Georgia explained to reporters before the upcoming match against the Mumbai Indians at the BCA Stadium.
The winner of Friday's match will secure a place in the playoffs, while the losing team will have to await the outcome of the Delhi Capitals vs. UP Warriorz match to determine their fate in the tournament.
Georgia also shared a new nickname for Sophie, who has been a pivotal death bowler for the Giants, having thwarted the Delhi Capitals' chase twice in the final over. “Sophie has delivered some clutch performances, especially in the closing overs against DC - she was incredibly reliable. Our bowling unit has performed well in those critical moments when defending runs,” she said.
“She isn’t fond of discussing it much, but we affectionately call her Sophie De-clutch. We remind her of it often, that’s for sure. It might just be the best nickname; she has some others that are less appropriate!”
When asked about the key to excelling in Vadodara, Georgia stated, “It’s been well noted that hitting the stumps as often as possible is crucial. Given the variable bounce here and the potential for spin, most dismissals have been from bowled or LBW. Lower strike rates tend to occur when we focus on hitting the stumps. For us bowlers, that’s our goal.”
