WPL 2026: Is Simplicity Key for Devine Ahead of GG-RCB Match?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) Veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine from the Gujarat Giants (GG) expressed her excitement about playing before their home fans and emphasized the importance of simplicity as they gear up to face the leading team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), marking the beginning of the Vadodara leg of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) this Monday evening.
After a recent 32-run defeat against RCB at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, GG is eager to make a comeback. “It’s thrilling to be back home, and we are looking forward to playing in front of our fans. Facing RCB, who are currently performing exceptionally well with four consecutive wins, is a significant challenge,” she stated.
“For us, the focus is on keeping it simple. We believe that when we perform at our best, we can conquer any team in this league. We are truly excited to play in front of our home supporters and aim for a couple of victories,” Sophie shared in a video on WPL’s social media channels.
Under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, RCB has dominated the five-team tournament, remaining unbeaten with eight points from four matches. GG, captained by Ashleigh Gardner, sits in third place with four points from the same number of matches.
So far, six WPL matches have taken place at the BCA Stadium, all in 2025, with teams batting second winning each time. Following the GG-RCB match, the Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will compete against the Delhi Capitals, captained by Jemimah Rodrigues, on Tuesday evening.
In their previous encounter, RCB secured a flawless start to the 2026 WPL with a 32-run win over the Gujarat Giants. This was highlighted by a remarkable five-wicket haul from all-rounder Shreyanka Patil at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Despite a shaky start with four wickets lost during the Power-play, RCB’s Radha Yadav emerged as a savior, scoring 66 runs off 42 balls, marking her first WPL fifty. She partnered with Richa Ghosh, who contributed 44 runs off 28 balls, and Nadine de Klerk added a late cameo of 26, bringing the total to 182/7.
