Vadodara, Jan 2 (NationPress) The reigning champion Divyanshi Bhowmik, along with Syndrela Das, Japan’s Miku Matsushima, and the promising Tanishka Kalbhairav, launched their U-17 girls singles journey in the World Table Tennis (WTT) Youth Contender 2026 with decisive victories during the group stage at the SAMA Indoor Stadium on Friday.

This second edition of the WTT Youth Contender, which commenced on Friday, includes competitions for ages ranging from U-11 to U-19, with the U-13 and U-17 boys' and girls' teams also competing on the first day.

Divyanshi, who clinched both the U-15 and U-17 girls singles titles last year, began her campaign strongly by defeating fellow Indian Neeza Kamat 11-4, 11-1, 11-2 in the opening match of Group 1, whereas Syndrela triumphed over Tania Karmakar with scores of 11-6, 11-6, 11-2 in Group 3.

Japan’s Matsushima made significant progress towards the knockout stage by winning against Swara Karmakar with scores of 11-3, 11-4, 11-2, followed by a victory over Anvi Gupte with scores of 11-6, 11-3, 11-8 in Group 2.

In the boys' U-17 section, top seed Ritvik Gupta won both of his matches in Group 1, defeating Dhruva Malikarjunan 11-9, 11-5, 11-5, and then besting Shreyas Mankeshwar 13-11, 11-6, 11-7.

Local talent Ved Panchal also progressed to the knockout stage with a perfect record of three wins in Group 21. He first overcame Aarav Singhvi 11-9, 11-7, 11-7, then faced a tough match against Aarav Rathi, winning 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, and finally triumphed over Nitin Veeraraghavan 12-10, 11-6, 11-7 to top the group.

Aditya Das and Sahil Rawat from Groups 2 and 3 also finished on top of their respective groups with two wins.

In the U-13 boys category, Shaurya Goyal had to fight hard for his victory, winning 10-12, 11-9, 13-11, 7-11, 11-6 against Suchet Dharennavar in Group 1.
