Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 8 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, stated on Thursday that if the Enforcement Directorate (ED) fails to act against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly interfering with officials during search and raid operations, it would convey a negative message to the residents of the state.
During a press briefing, Adhikari discussed the Chief Minister’s recent visit to the office of the political consultancy firm India Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and the home of its co-founder Pratik Jain on Loudon Street in central Kolkata, where the ED was conducting search operations concurrently.
He accused Banerjee of entering the premises during the raids and departing after seizing numerous documents and electronic files.
Adhikari claimed that the Chief Minister habitually obstructs central investigative agencies from fulfilling their official roles. He cited instances from 2019, when Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials attempted to visit the residence of then Kolkata Police Commissioner and current acting director general of state police, Rajeev Kumar. He noted that she tried to impede their efforts and even staged a sit-in demonstration in the city against the CBI. Again in 2021, she protested outside the CBI at Nizam Palace when CBI officials apprehended prominent members of the West Bengal cabinet and leaders of the Trinamool Congress.
Adhikari pointed out that Mamata Banerjee often overlooks her role as a Chief Minister beyond just a political figure. “A Chief Minister has many constitutional responsibilities. She cannot leverage her position to hinder central agency officials from performing their duties. Her actions on Thursday were both unethical and unconstitutional,” he remarked.
He further urged the ED to take appropriate legal action against the Chief Minister, emphasizing that failure to do so would send incorrect signals to the people of West Bengal. “I trust the ED will respond appropriately,” he added.
He also questioned the Chief Minister’s unease regarding the ED raid at a private corporate office.
I-PAC has been functioning as the electoral strategy agency for the Trinamool Congress since 2020.
