Madrid, March 19 (NationPress) FC Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal openly expresses his desire to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player, yet emphasizes that his primary goal is to assist his club in securing titles.
"The primary objective is for Barca to capture titles, and everything else will follow," Yamal stated in an interview with Spanish sports publication, Diario AS, noting that the Ballon d'Or is "something that typically comes alongside team achievements."
He mentioned that clinching the Champions League with Barca and the World Cup with Spain are his "two greatest aspirations."
The young talent foresees a fierce competition in the upcoming weeks against Real Madrid, as reported by Xinhua.
"It’s almost always a Barca-Madrid showdown at the end. Atletico Madrid makes it challenging, and I’m not counting them out yet, but ultimately it’s always (Real) Madrid and Barca that remain, both in the Copa del Rey and Champions League," he remarked.
Yamal also shared his deep connection to the Champions League, where Barcelona is set to face Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals.
"This is a competition that has fascinated me ever since I first heard the Champions League anthem on television as a child. Picture coming home late on a Tuesday after training with the youth team, turning on the TV with my parents, and watching the European Cup. It’s truly something special," said Yamal, who was hesitant to discuss the ongoing negotiations regarding his new contract, as his current agreement is set to expire at the end of June 2026.
"I don’t believe anyone is contemplating that right now: we are all focused on concluding the season with titles, we are in the critical phase of the season, and that’s all that occupies my thoughts. I won’t address the (contract) renewal until the season concludes," Yamal assured.
