New Delhi, Sep 30 (NationPress) Yogesh Kathuniya, a two-time Paralympic medallist from India, achieved remarkable success by securing the silver medal in the men’s discus throw F56 event at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today.
The 28-year-old athlete, who previously clinched silver at the 2020 and 2025 Paralympics, recorded his best throw of 42.49m during his second attempt, finishing behind Claudiney Batista, a medalist from the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics, who took home the gold with a throw of 45.67m. Meanwhile, Greece’s Konstantinos Tzounis secured third place with a throw of 39.97m.
This victory marks Kathuniya's third consecutive silver medal at the world championships, following his wins in the 2023 and 2024 competitions hosted in France and Japan, respectively.
Interestingly, during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Kathuniya also earned a silver medal, finishing behind Brazil's Batista. At the 2023 Para Athletics World Championships in Paris, he again took silver, solidifying his reputation in the sport.
Kathuniya's journey began at age nine when he developed a rare neurological disorder known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. He ventured into Para sports in 2017 while pursuing his studies in college.
So far, India has earned a total of six medals in this competition, comprising two golds, three silvers, and one bronze.
On the same day, Rinku Hooda and Sundar Singh Gurjar also made headlines by winning gold and silver medals, respectively, in the men’s javelin throw F46 class. Rinku, aged 26, set a new championship record with an impressive opening throw of 63.81m, surpassing the previous record of 61.89m established by China's Guo Chunliang in 2015.
Notably, Sundar, a bronze medallist from the Tokyo and Paris events, achieved a best throw of 64.76m in his fifth attempt, finishing behind Rinku. The day could have been even more successful for the host nation had Ajeet Singh not placed fourth.
Earlier in the day, Shailesh Kumar and Varun Singh Bhati secured gold and silver medals in the men’s high jump T63, while Deepthi Jeevanji added to India’s medal tally with a silver in the women’s 400m T20 event.
