New Delhi, July 17 (NationPress) Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta asserts that India would significantly enhance their chances by incorporating the elite fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the pivotal fourth Test against England in Manchester, especially considering the extended interval between matches.
Prior to the Test series in England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had declared that Bumrah would participate in only three out of five matches to manage his workload effectively. This strategy has resulted in Bumrah playing at Headingley and Lord’s, while being rested for the Edgbaston encounter.
“Definitely, we need Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth Test. I have heard speculations that the intention was for him to play in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tests. However, with India trailing 2-1, the fourth Test is critical for a comeback. It's essential to have the world’s leading bowler on the field,” stated Dasgupta on JioHotstar.
Interestingly, India has lost both Tests in which Bumrah participated, despite him achieving five-wicket hauls in the first innings at Headingley and Lord’s. As India looks to even the series at Old Trafford starting July 23, Bumrah’s role in the bowling lineup is crucial for the team led by Shubman Gill.
“There's an 8-day gap between the two Test matches. The significance of the fifth Test will depend on the outcome of the fourth — but for now, the importance of the fourth Test is extremely high,” Dasgupta added.
After suffering a 22-run defeat in a thrilling match at Lord’s, India currently trails 1-2 in the five-match series and is eager to rebound in Manchester before facing England in the final match of the series at The Oval in London from July 31 to August 4.
