New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) Former India wicketkeeper-batter Syed Kirmani asserts that aspiring young cricketers should strive to surpass the legendary batting figures Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma instead of merely emulating them.
Before last year's tour to England, both Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from Test cricket, having already stepped away from T20Is following their triumphant 2024 World Cup. This leaves them focused solely on ODIs, a format where they have consistently thrived.
"They have established a remarkable standard for younger players. With their outstanding records, they inspire aspiring cricketers during their active careers. Young athletes should analyze their capabilities and the benchmarks they have achieved. Rather than wanting to be like players A, B, C, or D, their objective should be to outdo them. This should be their primary goal and guiding principle," Kirmani expressed to IANS.
He noted that criticism often arises from the desire for ‘new talents’ and ‘fresh faces’ in the sport, emphasizing that the decision to retire should rest solely with the players themselves, and underscoring their invaluable experience and legacy.
Kirmani added that both players should continue their cricketing journey for as long as they enjoy the game and urged everyone to respect their choices.
“They should continue playing if they derive joy from cricket. Critics will always call for newcomers, desiring new talents. There’s no need for concern. Let them make their own decisions. Their rich experience is a crucial asset to the team, and seasoned players are always needed. We should not deter them from playing,” he remarked.
“Decisions regarding retirement should be left to them. Domestic cricket is also beneficial for young players aspiring to join the national team. Seasoned domestic players, whether in the Vijay Hazare or other tournaments, can mentor these emerging cricketers. As long as they contribute positively, they should be allowed to play as long as they wish. They are iconic figures with remarkable records that cannot simply be overlooked. As I mentioned, let them decide their retirement timeline,” he concluded.
While neither player has confirmed their retirement plans, it is widely speculated that the 2027 Cricket World Cup could mark their final appearance for India.
