Yuvraj Calls for Transparency on Rohit and Kohli's Future Before 2027 World Cup
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 3 (NationPress) Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has stressed the need for clear communication regarding the futures of senior batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the squad begins to formulate strategies for the 2027 ODI World Cup, set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Although both Rohit and Kohli have retired from Test and T20I formats, they continue to play a crucial role in India's 50-over lineup. However, their extended roles remain a topic of debate during a significant transition period for the national team.
In an interview with Sports Tak, Yuvraj highlighted that while both players seem eager to participate in the upcoming World Cup, the ultimate decision will be a joint one between the players and the selectors.
“I can’t ascertain what they are thinking. They appear committed to playing in the World Cup, but the decision rests with them and the selectors, who must determine their futures,” Yuvraj remarked.
The 2011 World Cup champion also pointed out the necessity of open dialogue between the players and the team's management.
“My point is that they are exceptional players, and clarity is essential. You should be able to convene in a room and discuss matters candidly. This can be challenging, especially at this stage in their careers,” Yuvraj stated.
He further emphasized that while such discussions might be uncomfortable, they are vital for both the players and the team's future direction.
“You might not relish hearing that the team is planning ahead, but a year from now, you'll appreciate that someone told you the truth directly. That type of transparency is rare in Indian cricket,” Yuvraj added.
Meanwhile, Kohli has demonstrated impressive form lately, climbing back to the top two positions in the ICC ODI rankings after a stellar run, including a remarkable series against South Africa, where he amassed 302 runs. Rohit also continues to be pivotal as India seeks to blend experience with emerging talent ahead of the next tournament.
Yuvraj also extended an apology to India's ODI World Cup champions MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev for his father Yograj Singh's contentious comments.
In response to his father's longstanding criticism regarding MS Dhoni's influence on his career and Kapil Dev's earlier choices, Yuvraj stated, “I wish to apologize to Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. I told my dad, that is unacceptable.”
Yuvraj further explained that he has always maintained a professional rapport with Dhoni and has even sought the former captain’s insights to gain clarity on past events.
