Ranchi, Dec 1 (NationPress) India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak expressed his perplexity regarding the ongoing discussions about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs, particularly considering their current impressive performance. Kohli showcased his classic form by scoring his 52nd ODI century (135 off 120) during India’s narrow 17-run victory in the first ODI of the three-match series against South Africa.
He formed a formidable 136-run partnership with former captain Rohit Sharma (57) and appeared to be in exceptional shape, marking his first century in 50-over cricket since his unbeaten century against Pakistan during the ICC Champions Trophy in February.
Despite Kohli receiving accolades for his 83rd international century, it sparked debates about his and Rohit's potential to continue at the ODI level as they aim for the next edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027.
In response, Kotak stated there’s ‘no point discussing this’ since ample international cricket lies ahead of the next ODI World Cup. He urged fans to appreciate Kohli, who remains in remarkable form.
“I don’t comprehend the need for these discussions - he’s (Kohli) batting incredibly well, and there’s no reason to speculate about his future,” Kotak mentioned during a post-match press conference. “The way he’s performing and maintaining his fitness - there are no doubts to be had.
“I believe matters concerning the 2027 World Cup shouldn’t even enter conversations given his current form. That event is still two years away. It’s pointless to dwell on it. For us, we focus on enjoying our practice once the team arrives,” he elaborated.
Kohli and Rohit, who recently led India in an ODI series in Australia, displayed excellent synergy, securing a match-defining partnership in Ranchi. However, speculation persists regarding whether Kohli, aged 37, and Rohit, aged 38, can sustain their form and fitness to compete in the 50-over World Cup two years from now.
“Undoubtedly, they share their extensive experience with others. I don’t see any discussions surrounding the 2027 World Cup. They’re just exceptional, and their contributions to the team are invaluable,” Kotak stated.
“Having such seasoned players is always beneficial. Their batting today, including that partnership, makes a significant impact. They performed exceptionally well,” Kotak concluded.
