London, Aug 29 (NationPress) Australia’s leg-spinner Adam Zampa and New Zealand’s captain Mitchell Santner have been officially excluded from Surrey’s knockout matches as the T20 Blast season resumes. Having topped the South Group, Surrey is preparing to face Northamptonshire in the quarterfinals at The Oval on September 3. Santner, 33, had previously withdrawn from The Hundred due to an injury and remains sidelined.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) later confirmed that Santner experienced groin pain while participating in The Hundred, leading to his return home. Moreover, NZC stated that Santner will undergo abdominal surgery, with an estimated recovery time of about one month, putting him in a tight spot to regain fitness ahead of the upcoming series against Australia.
“Mitch is an elite player and a vital part of our T20 setup regarding skills and leadership. Keeping this in mind, we plan to include him in our squad announcement in a couple of weeks. From there, we will evaluate his recovery and rehabilitation after surgery before making a final decision just before the series,” said head coach Rob Walter.
Santner participated in seven matches for Surrey during the Blast, accumulating 29 runs and claiming 14 wickets at an average of 12.42. On the other hand, Zampa, 33, will also be absent as Surrey disclosed that, regrettably, his withdrawal is a result of commitments to Cricket Australia, which were not communicated to them at the time of signing.
In his four matches with Surrey this season, Zampa managed to take nine wickets at an average of 13.22. The county club also announced that New Zealand fast bowler Nathan Smith will not participate in the T20 Blast anymore due to an injury sustained during the Black Caps’ 2-0 Test series victory over Zimbabwe.
