Harare, January 16 (NationPress) - Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has officially named the iconic West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh as a bowling consultant for the national team in preparation for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
ZC announced that Walsh has already commenced his duties with the squad, as Zimbabwe ramps up its training for the tournament. They are placed in Group B, which includes the 2021 champions Australia, 2014 winners Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Oman.
“I am thrilled about the chance to collaborate with Zimbabwe. I am eager to tackle the upcoming challenges. I believe we have a solid opportunity if we execute our plans effectively and function as a cohesive unit while adapting to the conditions. The potential within this bowling attack has truly impressed me,” stated Walsh.
Walsh represented the West Indies from 1984 to 2001, achieving a remarkable 519 wickets in 132 Tests and making history as the first bowler to surpass 500 Test wickets. Since retiring, he has transitioned into coaching, serving as the head coach for the West Indies women’s team and taking on the role of bowling coach for Bangladesh’s men’s side.
In April 2024, he also contributed as a technical consultant to the Zimbabwe women’s national team. “Courtney Walsh brings unmatched experience and insight from the highest echelons of international cricket, especially in fast bowling. As we gear up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, it was crucial to have someone who comprehends what it takes to excel on the world stage,” remarked Givemore Makoni, ZC Managing Director.
“Courtney’s expertise, professionalism, and mentoring abilities will be essential as we enhance our bowling resources for the challenges that lie ahead. He has previously worked with our women’s team and is familiar with our cricket environment. This continuity, paired with his global coaching experience, assures us he will have a significant impact on the team,” he added.
Zimbabwe is set to kick off its 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign against Oman at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on February 9. They will subsequently face Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 13.
Following that, they will head to Kandy to take on Ireland at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on February 17 before returning to Colombo for their final group match against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 19. The top two teams from Group B will advance to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
