Wellington, Aug 13 (NationPress) The 2025/26 Plunket Shield, New Zealand's premier domestic first-class cricket tournament, is set to kick off on November 18. This season marks a significant milestone as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the competition, with the concluding eighth round scheduled to commence on March 27.
The Plunket Shield made its debut in 1906, embracing a round-robin format since the 1921/22 season. The shield was first presented by the Governor of New Zealand, Lord Plunket, to Canterbury, recognizing them as the association with the most outstanding record that year.
The 1921-22 summer heralded a new era for men's domestic first-class cricket in New Zealand, with the Plunket Shield being contested seasonally by four of the current six Major Associations, with the Central Districts (1950-51) and Northern Districts (1956-57) joining later.
Looking ahead to 2025, after accounting for the five seasons that were suspended due to World War II (1939-1945), this upcoming summer marks the 100th season of the men's first-class competition known as the Plunket Shield. This milestone is a remarkable achievement for cricket in New Zealand, and it deserves to be celebrated, remarked NZC statistician Francis Payne in a statement on Wednesday.
Among the notable players, Michael Snedden, a fast bowler for the Wellington Firebirds, holds a unique connection to the Plunket Shield as a fourth-generation first-class cricketer. He follows the legacy of his father, Martin, grandfather, Warwick, and great-grandfather, Nessie Snedden, who participated in the inaugural 1921/22 season.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) also announced that a special commemorative logo will be revealed to celebrate the 100th season, alongside the unveiling of an all-time Plunket Shield XI as part of the centenary festivities leading into and throughout the season.
“Every player who has participated in this competition, whether a star, a journeyman, or someone who made only a brief appearance, has played a role in shaping one of the country's most recognized sporting events and has contributed to its success,” stated Scott Weenink, CEO of NZC.
He expressed, “Our domestic competitions are among the best globally, with the Plunket Shield being the crown jewel. The foundation for the BLACKCAPS team that achieved victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship and made history in India last year is rooted in the Plunket Shield.
“It continues to nurture players ready for international cricket, affirming its significance even after more than a century since it was established,” added Weenink.
