Beijing, Aug 5 (NationPress) - The 2026 World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in London will showcase an unprecedented 64 teams competing in both the men's and women's categories, as confirmed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on Tuesday.
This expansion commemorates the centennial of both the inaugural world championships, which took place in London in 1926, and the establishment of the ITTF in the same year. The tournament format will transition from the previous 40-team structure.
As per the schedule, the Copper Box Arena will host the initial rounds from April 28 to May 1, 2026, followed by the competitions moving to Wembley Arena from May 2 to 10, according to reports from Xinhua.
The 64 teams in each category will be divided into 16 groups of four. Each group will conduct a round-robin competition with three matches per team.
Included among the 16 groups are two elite groups, which feature the top seven ranked teams alongside the host nation. These eight teams will automatically progress to the 32-team knockout phase, where results will only serve to determine seedings for the elimination rounds.
Top performers from the other groups will also advance directly, along with six of the best second-placed teams based on their match records.
The remaining eight second-placed teams will engage in a preliminary knockout round, with the four victors securing the final spots in the 32-team lineup.
The women's team final is slated for May 9, followed by the men's team final on May 10.
