Moderate 5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Manipur, No Casualties Reported
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Imphal, April 21 (NationPress) A moderate seismic event registering a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale rattled the Kamjong district of Manipur and surrounding areas, including parts of Myanmar, on Tuesday morning, according to officials.
Authorities from the Disaster Management department in Imphal have reported no immediate indications of casualties or property damage as a result of the quake.
Data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) revealed that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 62 km, impacting Kamjong and its neighboring regions.
Tremors were also perceived in Ukhrul district and the state capital, Imphal, extending even to some areas of Meghalaya, but fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or damage in these locales.
This tremor marks the second seismic event to hit the northeastern mountainous region in less than a week.
Just days before, on April 16, a lesser quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale was recorded in Mizoram’s Mamit district and nearby areas. That event occurred at a depth of 22 km without any reported injuries or property damage.
On April 15, another minor quake measuring 2.1 on the Richter scale was reported in Sikkim’s Mamchi district and its surroundings. The NCS noted that this tremor hit at a depth of 10 km, again without causing any loss of life or damage.
Additionally, on April 15, another minor tremor measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale was felt in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district and nearby regions. This quake was recorded at a shallow depth of 5 km, with no reports of injuries or damage.
Analysis of NCS data shows that the Northeastern region has experienced multiple earthquakes each week, with the majority falling between magnitudes 3 and 4 on the Richter scale.
In this mountainous region comprising eight states, earthquakes are relatively common, situated in one of the world’s most seismically active zones. The frequent tremors—mostly mild to moderate—in states like Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya have raised concerns among local authorities.
These recurring seismic activities highlight the critical need for implementing earthquake-resistant construction methods in both public and private infrastructures.
