Mild Earthquake Strikes Churachandpur in Manipur, No Casualties Reported

Imphal, Jan 2 (NationPress) A minor earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale, shook the Churachandpur district of southern Manipur on Thursday afternoon, as reported by officials.
As stated by a Disaster Management Official, the seismic event was perceptible in the hilly areas of Churachandpur and its neighboring regions on Thursday afternoon.
The official confirmed that there have been no immediate reports of fatalities or property damage.
Data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) indicates that the tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km beneath the surface.
This latest tremor in Manipur follows two preceding earthquakes in Assam (on December 22) and Arunachal Pradesh (on December 23), which measured 3.5 and 3.7 on the Richter scale, respectively.
According to NCS records, between October 28 and November 30, a total of eleven earthquakes impacted several northeastern states—including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, and Sikkim—within a span of 34 days.
Based on NCS data, more than one earthquake has been recorded each week in the northeastern states, predominantly measuring between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale. The series of earthquakes, primarily of mild to moderate intensity, in the mountainous northeastern region, particularly in Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur, has raised concerns among authorities, prompting both public and private developers to construct earthquake-resistant buildings.
Seismologists regard the mountainous northeastern region as the sixth most earthquake-prone area globally.
In 1950, an earthquake that registered 8.7 on the Richter scale changed the course of the mighty Brahmaputra river, which flows adjacent to the bustling city of Guwahati, the primary commercial hub of the northeastern region. Another significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck northeastern India in 1988, resulting in the deaths of over 200 individuals in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. In 2011, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake rattled Sikkim and parts of West Bengal, claiming more than 100 lives. Another quake in 2017, measuring 5.7, hit 20 km northeast of Ambassa in Tripura’s Dhalai district.
Management authorities are actively engaged in conducting awareness initiatives regarding the frequent seismic activities in the northeastern states.
