Chandigarh, Jan 1 (NationPress) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration in Punjab is deceiving the populace by falsely asserting that Rs 23,446 crore is outstanding under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from the Centre, claimed state BJP General Secretary Anil Sarin on Thursday.
In a pointed critique of Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Sarin accused the government of distorting figures from the Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (2024–2025). He noted that while Cheema presents the first page of the report, the following page explicitly states that in 2024–25, there are no outstanding wage dues for MGNREGA workers across any state.
Detailing the funding process under MGNREGA, Sarin explained that the initial instalment is allocated each year in early April. Subsequently, as a state submits utilization certificates in line with established rules for the funds received, the next instalment is promptly disbursed.
However, he pointed out that if a state does not provide utilization certificates as mandated, the Central government is unable to release further instalments under the MGNREGA Act.
Sarin additionally alleged that of the 13,304 panchayats in Punjab, audits for 5,915 panchayats remain incomplete. He also reported that 10,653 cases of fraud or forgery have emerged within the MGNREGA program, yet the AAP government is refraining from taking action in these matters.
“Who are they trying to shield? Crores of rupees have been squandered through fraudulent cards,” he inquired.
The BJP leader stated that information regarding the alleged scams within the MGNREGA has already been communicated by party leaders to Union Minister for Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
He asserted that the claims made by the Punjab government are merely verbal, while the actual situation is vastly divergent.
In a direct challenge to the AAP government concerning the atta-dal scheme, Sarin questioned why a government that considers itself a benefactor of the Dalits has discontinued the scheme.
He emphasized that any compromise on the rights of the impoverished is indefensible.
Sarin further contended that instead of the promised 100 days of employment under MGNREGA, the Punjab government has only provided 36 days of work within the state.
Challenging the AAP administration, Sarin declared that the BJP will unveil what he termed the “falsehoods” of the AAP government across every platform, insisting that Finance Minister Cheema must present the accurate figures to the populace of Punjab.
