Mumbai, Jan 11 (NationPress) The head coach of Delhi Capitals, Jonathan Batty, provided insights into the team's performance, discussing their execution, batting depth, and the positives that emerged despite a 50-run defeat to Mumbai Indians. Batty stated that while 190 runs is a score that could be chased down, the team simply "did not quite click with the bat."
In their inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy on Saturday, Delhi Capitals suffered a loss, bowled out for 145 while chasing a target of 196. This defeat came despite a commendable half-century from Chinelle Henry, who scored 56 runs off 33 balls. Earlier, Mumbai Indians had set a formidable score of 195 for 4, bolstered by half-centuries from Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt.
During the post-match press conference, Batty remarked, “I thought it was a really good wicket. In the first half, we bowled well for the initial ten overs, and we were pleased with our performance. We would have preferred to take another wicket or two, but their two best players formed a strong partnership.”
Evaluating the bowling strategy, he continued, “Our plans were solid, and about 75% of our bowling was executed well. However, when we missed, we missed significantly, allowing them to score freely. With a fast outfield and short boundaries, 190 runs is a target our batting lineup can chase.”
On the batting front, Batty acknowledged, “We didn’t manage to perform as expected with the bat. It was just one of those days. Nicola Carey bowled exceptionally well, especially during a critical over in the powerplay, taking two wickets and putting us under pressure.”
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the team composition and batting order, stating, “I am truly satisfied with our batting lineup. It is a terrific group of seven or eight players, with Sneh Rana coming in at number eight. This lineup should accumulate runs throughout the tournament. We constantly reassess, but I am very happy with this group. Players like Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues possess tremendous quality, and they will find their rhythm.”
Batty also lauded debutante Nandni Sharma for her performance, saying, “Nandni has been on our radar for a while. She has participated in several trial camps and had a successful domestic season. Her impressive training sessions culminated in a beautiful bowling display. Ending with figures of 2/26 on her debut is an excellent start to her WPL journey.”
Despite the defeat, the DC head coach emphasized the positives to carry forward. “At one point, we were at 88 for 6, while they were at 88 for 2. This highlights the game's dynamics at that moment. There are numerous positives to take from this, and we will address them in our debrief,” he concluded.
Delhi Capitals' next challenge awaits against Gujarat Giants on Sunday at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.
