Chandigarh, Sep 3 (NationPress) In a groundbreaking achievement, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student arm of the BJP, has made a historic mark by winning the Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) election for the first time ever.
Gaurav Veer Sohal, a research scholar from the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), has been elected as President after receiving 3,148 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Sumit Sharma, by a margin of 488 votes.
Upon his victory, Sohal expressed his solidarity with those affected by the recent floods in Punjab, stating, “My heart goes out to the people who are suffering due to the flood in Punjab.”
This election featured eight candidates contending for the President's role. Notably, this marks the first time the ABVP has secured the President's seat since Panjab University began direct elections for student office-bearers in 1977.
Historically, national-level student organizations had maintained a low profile on campus, overshadowed by local groups. However, this trend has shifted in recent years.
In response to this remarkable victory, Punjab state unit chief Sunil Jakhar remarked on X, “ABVP has scripted history by winning the election for the presidentship of Panjab University Students’ Council for the first time in 48 years. Heartiest congratulations to Gaurav Veer Sohal on becoming the President of PUSC, and kudos to the entire ABVP team for this great victory.”
Other student organizations, including the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), and the Students Organisation of India (SOI), saw disappointing results in this election.
In last year’s elections, a rebel candidate from the NSUI emerged victorious, while AAP’s student wing had won in 2022.
Panjab University, renowned for its illustrious alumni such as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Nobel Laureate Hargobind Khorana, has made significant contributions to science in India and globally—a fact that is not widely recognized.
Founded as the University of Punjab in Lahore on October 14, 1882, it was re-established in India on October 1, 1947.
The university moved to its current stunning 550-acre campus in Chandigarh in 1956.
Today, the institution boasts around 60 teaching and research departments and has over 170 affiliated colleges.
