Is the ECI Underestimating the Issues Raised by Suvendu Adhikari?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 23 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has recently criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its perceived leniency in addressing the obstacles encountered during the special intensive revision (SIR). He specifically highlighted the recurring incidents of violence attributed to activists of the ruling Trinamool Congress at venues designated for hearing claims and objections regarding the draft voters’ list.
“Why does the Commission only issue communiqués concerning these challenges? The citizens of West Bengal require more than mere statements; they demand decisive action from the ECI. The time for discussion is past; action is now imperative,” the BJP leader stated to reporters on Friday.
During his address, he also raised concerns about the absence of central armed police forces (CAPF) at the hearing centers. “The Constitution of India bestows the ECI with the highest level of authority. They have the power to deploy central forces without prior consultation. Even the army can be dispatched if deemed necessary. While the ECI and the Trinamool Congress have sought recourse from the Supreme Court, the average citizen can also approach the apex court,” Adhikari asserted.
Recently, West Bengal BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP, Samik Bhattacharya, echoed similar sentiments, accusing the ECI of failing to adequately address the disruptions allegedly caused by Trinamool Congress leaders during the revision process.
Bhattacharya went so far as to suggest that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) should personally assess the situation in West Bengal regarding the revision exercise.
On Friday, the Leader of the Opposition made a notable remark concerning the potential voting behavior of minorities in the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
“While minorities in West Bengal might not cast their votes for the BJP, I believe they will also refrain from supporting the Trinamool Congress this time,” Adhikari concluded.
