Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday requested a comprehensive report from the district magistrate-cum-district electoral officer of North Dinajpur district in West Bengal regarding a previous incident involving tension and violence at a hearing centre in Itahar.
The situation was highlighted by the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who shared a video of the violence on social media, tagging both the Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal.
In his earlier post, Adhikari accused the state government of neglecting security for officials on SIR duty, which he claimed was a blatant disregard for a recent Supreme Court directive mandating the maintenance of peaceful law and order at hearing centres.
Earlier that day, the Commission instructed the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against Manirul Islam, a Trinamool Congress legislator from the Farakka Assembly constituency in Murshidabad, over the destruction of a hearing centre for claims and objections concerning the draft voters’ list in West Bengal on January 14.
“The Commission is treating every report of tension and violence with utmost seriousness and is ensuring swift action,” stated an insider from the CEO’s office.
Since the commencement of the hearing process for claims and objections on the draft voters’ list in West Bengal, there have been numerous reports of tension and violence at various hearing centres across the state, with allegations pointing towards ruling Trinamool Congress leaders and their supporters as the instigators.
