Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has expressed strong disapproval of the Mamata Banerjee administration following a violent protest at a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing centre in Itahar, North Dinajpur district.
In a post on his social media account X, Adhikari accused the state government of having “failed” in ensuring the safety of officials conducting SIR duties amid the chaos instigated by a mob.
He stated, “The West Bengal Police and Administration have openly defied the Hon'ble Supreme Court's directive to protect electoral processes and officials!”
Adhikari condemned the assault on electoral officials, declaring, “This is yet another stark example of lawlessness under the TMC regime. During the SIR hearing at Itahar High School, a violent group of miscreants wreaked havoc, damaging property and disrupting proceedings. In a shocking turn of events, a Lady AERO was brutally attacked in broad daylight, underscoring the total breakdown of Law and Order in West Bengal.”
Disorder erupted during the SIR hearing in Itahar as a mob vandalised the facility, protesting against the perceived harassment of the public regarding SIR hearings.
Adhikari further remarked, “The Police and Administration acted as mere bystanders, allowing these goons to rampage unchecked. Mamata Banerjee's government continues to undermine democracy, protecting criminals while endangering the security of officials and voters.”
He urged the Election Commission to take action, calling for severe measures against the negligent Police Officers and Administrative Officials who failed in their responsibilities. “I implore the Election Commission of India to intervene immediately and take the strongest possible action,” he added.
Previously, similar protests had flared up across the state, including at the BDO office in Murshidabad district's Farakka, over related grievances.
