West Bengal CEO Requests Police Investigation into Heckling Incident Involving Suvendu Adhikari
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has formally requested a thorough report from Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar regarding the incident surrounding the heckling of Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. This occurred in front of the CEO's office in central Kolkata on Tuesday evening.
On that evening, Adhikari, along with senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), arrived to present a formal deputation to the CEO. However, they were met by a group of booth-level officers (BLOs) allegedly associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress, who organized a protest at the same location.
During the protest, some individuals reportedly engaged in aggressive acts, including throwing shoes at Adhikari, which escalated tensions and caused disruptions around the CEO's office.
Adhikari later criticized the extensive police presence, accusing them of acting as “puppets” and failing to adequately manage the protest or prevent the heckling.
Earlier that Wednesday, the BJP state unit delivered another formal deputation to CEO Agarwal, detailing the events from the previous evening and urging him to take appropriate action.
In response to the complaints from Adhikari and BJP officials, the CEO's office sought a comprehensive report from Commissioner Sarkar regarding the incident and the related circumstances.
Simultaneously, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has opted to temporarily suspend the booth rationalization process in West Bengal ahead of the critical Assembly elections scheduled for later this year. This decision aligns with a Supreme Court order that mandates the publication of the final voters' list on February 28, along with supplementary lists due to ongoing judicial scrutiny of voter documents categorized under 'logical discrepancy'. Thus, no rationalization will proceed until the finalized voter count is confirmed.
