Is the ECI Taking Action Against Trinamool Legislator for Ransacking a Hearing Centre?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against Manirul Islam, the Trinamool Congress legislator from the Farakka Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district. This action pertains to the alleged ransacking of a facility that handles claims and objections regarding the draft voters’ list in West Bengal.
The incident, reportedly instigated by activists of the ruling Trinamool Congress last week, was allegedly led by Islam, as indicated by various media reports and videos that emerged following the event on January 14.
On Thursday, the ECI instructed the District Magistrate, who also serves as the District Electoral Officer of Murshidabad, to ensure that the FIR against Islam is registered promptly and to inform the Commission through the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
In the wake of the ransacking incident, which occurred on the afternoon of January 14, ECI officials reached out to the office of West Bengal’s Acting Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, urging him to take decisive actions regarding the situation.
Consequently, an FIR was lodged at the Farakka Police Station. However, it was reported that the primary individuals involved, including Islam, were not mentioned in that FIR.
The matter was subsequently escalated to the Commission, which once again directed the District Magistrate and the District Electoral Officer of Murshidabad on Thursday to register the FIR against Islam.
On Wednesday, the ECI had instructed Rajeev Kumar, West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma to adhere to a prior Supreme Court order and ensure a completely peaceful law and order situation in the state during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
In a correspondence to Kumar, Chakraborty, and Verma, the Commission also warned the state government that strict measures would be enforced in case of non-compliance with the apex court’s directives.
The ECI has further directed the state government to allocate sufficient personnel to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manoj Kumar Agarwal, for deployment at panchayat bhawans, block offices, and other locations where hearings concerning claims and objections to the draft voters’ list are conducted.
