Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 4 (NationPress) As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections draw near, the AIADMK has launched the second phase of its electoral commitments, focusing on social welfare and economic aid as the core of its campaign.
The Party's General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami unveiled a range of benefits targeted at senior citizens, women, students, minorities, and economically disadvantaged groups, should the party regain control.
During a press briefing in Chennai, Palaniswami detailed that the monthly pension for the elderly would be raised to Rs 2,000. This same financial support will also be provided to destitute women, including those who have been abandoned, increasing their assistance from Rs 1,200.
To alleviate the burden on students, the party has committed to waiving educational loans taken from banks, with the state government covering these costs. This measure is expected to resonate with middle-class and rural families facing escalating education expenses.
The initiative also encompasses household welfare, with all family cardholders set to receive three free cooking gas cylinders annually to mitigate the effects of rising LPG prices.
Furthermore, the party has pledged compensation for victims of accidents related to Jallikattu, offering Rs 10 lakh to the families of deceased victims and Rs 2 lakh to those injured.
Government-recognized Jallikattu events are also set to receive Rs 5 lakh in financial aid.
Special measures have been proposed for marginalized communities, including the cancellation of loans from cooperative banks for individuals with disabilities.
Interest-free loans will be available to minority women, including Muslims, to assist them in starting small enterprises and achieving financial independence.
These announcements follow the first phase of promises made on January 17, which included increasing women's assistance programs to Rs 2,000, free travel for men in city buses, land distribution to the rural homeless under the ‘Amma Illam’ scheme, housing for the urban homeless, expansion of rural employment initiatives to 150 days, and providing Amma two-wheelers to 500,000 women.
Through a blend of welfare enhancements and focused financial support, the AIADMK is crafting its manifesto to attract women, youth, farmers, and low-income households as it prepares for a closely monitored electoral contest in the state.
