New Delhi, Aug 11 (NationPress) Tata Group-owned Air India announced on Monday the suspension of its flight services between Delhi and Washington, D.C., starting from September 1, 2025, owing to various operational challenges.
The airline has been grappling with multiple issues since the tragic Boeing 787 incident in Ahmedabad on June 12, stating that this decision is aimed at preserving the reliability and integrity of Air India’s overall route network.
According to a press release, the suspension is largely influenced by the anticipated shortfall in Air India’s fleet, following the commencement of retrofitting 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month.
“This extensive retrofit initiative, designed to significantly improve customer experience, will result in the prolonged unavailability of several aircraft until at least the end of 2026. Alongside this, the ongoing airspace closure over Pakistan complicates the airline’s long-haul operations, leading to elongated flight routes and heightened operational complexity,” Air India stated.
Passengers holding Air India tickets to or from Washington, D.C. after September 1, 2025, will receive notifications and will be provided with alternative travel options, including rebooking on different flights or full refunds, according to their preferences.
Meanwhile, Air India will continue to offer one-stop flights to Washington, D.C. through New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco via its interline partners, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, which allows customers to travel on a single itinerary with their luggage checked through to the final destination.
Air India will maintain its non-stop flights connecting India to six North American destinations, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.
Earlier today, a technical issue in an Air India flight arriving from Delhi resulted in a stressful hour-long delay at Raipur airport, leaving approximately 160 passengers, including a sitting MLA, stranded aboard the aircraft without immediate explanation.
On Sunday, an Air India flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi, carrying several senior political figures, was compelled to make an emergency landing at Chennai airport due to a suspected radar malfunction.
The DGCA is expected to conduct an investigation regarding both the technical issue and the sequence of events that brought about the aborted landing.
