Air India Flight Makes Unexpected Return to Delhi After 9-Hour Journey Due to Regulatory Oversight
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) An Air India flight, destined for Vancouver, Canada, had to return to Delhi after a lengthy 9-hour journey due to a significant oversight. The Boeing 777-200LR aircraft used for this route lacked the necessary clearance from Canada's aviation authorities, causing the flight to turn back.
Sources indicated that the flight, identified as AI185, departed from Delhi with a full passenger load at 12:18 p.m. on Thursday. However, Air India was only authorized to operate Boeing 777-300ER planes on this route, which have a longer range and a larger seating capacity of 350 to 396 passengers. In contrast, the 777-200LR has a maximum range of approximately 15,840 km but accommodates fewer passengers, with a capacity of 301 to 317.
After entering Chinese airspace near Kunming about four hours post-departure, the pilots discovered the mistake and promptly turned back, safely landing in Delhi after a taxing journey.
An Air India representative stated: "The return of flight AI185 from Delhi to Vancouver on March 19 was due to an operational issue and adhered to established standard operating procedures. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked without incident."
They added, "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our guests by this unexpected situation. Our ground teams in Delhi provided all necessary support, including hotel accommodations, as we worked to get our passengers to their destination as soon as possible. The flight departed again this morning for Vancouver with the passengers."
This is not the first time Air India has faced scrutiny from the Indian civil aviation regulator. In November 2025, the airline operated eight commercial flights using an Airbus A320neo that lacked a valid Airworthiness Review Certificate (ARC), resulting in a substantial fine of Rs 1 crore imposed by the DGCA.
