Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 6 (NationPress) The All India Secular Front (AISF) has expressed its willingness to consider a conditional alliance for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, aiming to collaborate with the new party that will be established by the currently suspended Trinamool Congress legislator from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir, who represents the minority-populated Murshidabad district.
“Kabir must avoid making communal remarks and also retract the divisive statements he has previously made before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At this stage, we are not prepared to forge an immediate alliance with his new party. Our prerequisite is that he must first retract his divisive comments and commit to not making such remarks in the future. Only then can we contemplate discussions regarding a potential electoral partnership,” stated Naushad Siddiqui, the sole AISF member in the West Bengal assembly, during a press briefing on Saturday.
Prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kabir controversially claimed at a public gathering that Hindus in the minority-majority Murshidabad area would be “cut and thrown into the Bhagirathi River.”
Kabir has already indicated his intention to resign from his position as the legislator representing Bharatpur and plans to launch his new political party on December 22, where he will also unveil the names of the party’s officials.
When inquired if the AISF might benefit from a potential split in minority votes, particularly in the Murshidabad district due to Kabir's suspension, Siddiqui clarified that his party does not engage in voter segmentation based on religion.
“We focus solely on broader public interests. In West Bengal, neither Hindus nor Muslims are satisfied under the governance of the Trinamool Congress. Currently, Mamata Banerjee is preoccupied with temple constructions to attract Hindu voters, and Kabir's suspension is not ideologically motivated but is again an attempt to appeal to Hindu voters. However, our Hindu brothers will not be deceived by such tactics. Concurrently, a significant portion of Muslim voters is determined to oust the Trinamool Congress from power in 2026,” Siddiqui remarked.
