New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure Mani Shankar Aiyar expressed skepticism regarding the United States' dual engagement with both India and Pakistan, questioning how Washington's relationship with Islamabad serves New Delhi's interests while simultaneously asserting its close alliance with India.
Aiyar pointed out that despite the government's attempts to highlight robust Indo-US relations through events such as 'Howdy Modi' and 'Namaste Trump', the US continues to sustain its strategic ties with Pakistan.
In an interview with IANS, Aiyar stated, "We must demonstrate to the world that we are independent and not pursuing friendships. It is crucial for both nations to foster amicable relations. Maintaining contrasting relationships with China and the US is not a sound foreign policy."
"Even the younger generation perceives that despite grand events like 'Howdy Modi' and 'Namaste Trump', the prevailing situation is such that Pakistan is receiving accolades. They are welcoming a Pakistani Field Marshal, known for self-promotion. On one hand, the US claims to be an excellent friend of India, yet on the other, it is engaging with Pakistan. How does this serve our interests?"
On the economic front, Aiyar criticized the 25 percent tariffs imposed on India by the US, stating, "America asserts that India has the highest tariffs globally. Trump is taking credit for the ceasefire agreement. While Pakistan acknowledges it, India refutes any claims of mediation. Thus, Islamabad reaps the rewards, while we endure the consequences."
He also accused the government of lacking the fortitude to challenge the US administration regarding unsubstantiated claims.
Aiyar remarked, "Trump has repeatedly asserted that the US facilitated the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, yet our government hesitates to declare him untruthful. The administration lacks the courage to confront their so-called allies and adversaries honestly," Aiyar concluded.
