Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Voting for elections to 92 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across Andhra Pradesh concluded on Sunday, 1 November 2026, with State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha describing polling as largely peaceful, barring minor incidents. A preliminary voter turnout of 48.03% was recorded up to 3:00 pm, with the final figure expected to be announced on Monday after complete data is received from reception centres.
Scale of the Election
Polling was held across 13 Municipal Corporations and 79 Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats, with voting open from 7 am to 5 pm. Voters still in queues at 5 pm were permitted to cast their ballots. A total of 99.35 lakh registered voters were eligible to vote at 11,378 polling centres spread across the state.
The contest was sizeable: 10,262 candidates are in the fray for mayoral, chairperson, and ward-level posts. Among them, 153 candidates are contesting for mayor posts across the 13 municipal corporations, while 367 candidates are competing for chairperson positions in 70 municipalities. For the 804 contested municipal corporation wards (out of 922 total corporator wards), 3,077 candidates are standing; the remaining 118 wards saw unanimous elections. An additional 6,669 candidates are contesting 2,382 wards across Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats.
Uncontested Wins and Early Results
Elections for chairperson posts in 17 Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats were decided unanimously, without polling. In eight Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats, both chairpersons and ward members were returned unopposed. The fate of the remaining candidates will be determined on 3 November, when counting of votes is scheduled to take place.
Incidents and Complaints
Inspector General Raja Kumari stated that approximately 40 incidents were reported during Sunday's polling, with 275 FIRs registered. She confirmed that all incidents are being thoroughly examined, and FIRs are being filed where criminal elements are identified.
State Election Commissioner Punetha said he received complaints and representations from representatives of various political parties and directed the police, District Collectors, Superintendents of Police, and Police Commissioners to investigate and take necessary action. He held a 45-minute discussion with District Collectors from Nandyal, Kadapa, Palnadu, Markapuram, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Anantapur, Kurnool, Annamayya, and Sri Satya Sai districts regarding the polling process and any incidents of violence. Collectors from most districts reported peaceful polling, with only minor complaints in a few areas and none at all in others.
Notably, the District Collectors of Palnadu and Anantapur flagged specific incidents in their districts. The Commissioner indicated that Presiding Officer reports and other evidence will be reviewed after polling concludes; if complaints are substantiated, action will be taken per regulations.
Vijayawada Ward Extension
In Ward 55 of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, polling began approximately two and a half hours late due to technical and other issues. The Election Commissioner extended voting hours in that ward from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, following a request from the District Collector and in exercise of the powers vested in the Commission, to ensure all eligible voters could exercise their franchise.
What Comes Next
The final voter turnout percentage will be announced on Monday, once all data from reception centres is verified and tallied. Counting of votes across all contested seats is scheduled for 3 November 2026, when the outcomes for mayoral, chairperson, and ward posts will become clear. The results will offer a significant gauge of party support across urban Andhra Pradesh ahead of future electoral cycles.
