Imphal, May 31 (NationPress) The Army, along with the Assam Rifles, initiated ‘Operation JalRahat 2’ on Saturday to assist and provide relief to individuals impacted by the severe flash floods and torrential rains in Manipur, which were caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, according to officials.
A spokesperson for the defence stated that the operation was launched following urgent requests for assistance from the Deputy Commissioner due to the extensive flooding affecting various regions of Manipur. On that day, approximately 800 individuals, including 10 to 20 differently abled and elderly persons, were successfully rescued.
Troops from the Assam Rifles were rapidly deployed using ‘Quick Reaction Teams’ to the hardest-hit areas including Porompat, Wankhei, Sanjenthong, Palace Compound, New Checkon, Khurai Heikrumakhong Heinang, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Nongmeibung Raj Bari, and surrounding regions in both Imphal East and West districts.
Two primary rescue columns were mobilized as part of this operation. The first column, located in Singjamei, managed to rescue a total of 193 individuals, which included 85 women and 44 children. Concurrently, the second column focused on Heikrumakhong, successfully rescuing 182 people comprising 35 men, 90 women, and 57 children. Additionally, early on Saturday morning, the Assam Rifles swiftly evacuated the office of All India Radio (AIR) Imphal upon receiving an urgent request from the Director of AIR. The office had been heavily flooded, necessitating the quick relocation of both personnel and crucial IT and communication equipment to ensure safety and the continuity of broadcasting services.
