Guwahati, Aug 9 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a vehement critique of opposition leaders concerning the state's ongoing eviction initiatives and measures against illegal encroachments.
In a pointed message aimed at Congress MP and state party president Gaurav Gogoi, Sarma accused the Congress of trying to grant illegal immigrants an identity in Assam.
“If the Congress party and its state president are so concerned about non-Assamese individuals, they should provide them shelter in their own homes or transport illegal immigrants to Rahul Gandhi's residence in Delhi. I have no accommodation for illegal immigrants in Assam,” stated Sarma.
Reiterating his government's position, the Chief Minister said, “The Assamese community has been striving for their land rights, and I am committed to ensuring our citizens receive their rightful civil liberties.”
Sarma also responded to Lurinjyoti Gogoi, leader of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, who has voiced objections to the evictions.
“Since the Assam agitation, no Chief Minister has succeeded in recovering lands from the grip of illegal settlers. In my time, we have reclaimed 1,29,000 bighas of land from encroachers, and we will pursue this throughout the state,” Sarma affirmed.
He clarified that none of the reclaimed lands, whether in Gorukhuti or other areas, have been allocated to industrialists like Adani or Ambani. “Leaders like Lurinjyoti Gogoi must cease making baseless allegations and verify their information,” he added.
Earlier, Gaurav Gogoi criticized the state government's management of the ongoing ‘Miya’ campaign, claiming Sarma is neglecting the genuine issues faced by indigenous communities while politicizing the illegal migration matter.
Gogoi raised concerns over the lack of official statistics regarding arrests made under the campaign, implying a political motive behind the initiative.
“If the district administration fails to meet its responsibilities, the Chief Minister should take responsibility and resign,” he cautioned, warning against the potential harassment of Indian citizens under the pretext of targeting illegal migrants.
