What is Congress's Position on Illegal Immigrants? Assam CM Questions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 6 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intensified his criticism of the Congress party on Friday, insisting that they must clarify their stance on whether they support the indigenous Assamese population or align with illegal immigrants, referring to them as 'Miya', a term he associates with the Muslim individuals who have migrated from Bangladesh into the region.
After participating in a program in Dergaon, CM Sarma emphasized that the discourse regarding illegal immigration and identity in Assam can no longer be ignored and cautioned that political indecisiveness on this matter could lead to unrest.
"The Congress has to make their position clear. They need to declare if they stand with Assamese society or with illegal settlers," stated the Chief Minister.
He expressed concerns over what he perceives as alarming demographic changes, noting that illegal settlers who were once largely confined to areas such as Barpeta and Dhubri have now expanded to regions in Upper Assam, including towns like Duliajan and Margherita.
CM Sarma alleged that around 10 lakh acres of land throughout the state have been encroached, threatening the rights and future of indigenous communities.
He raised issues regarding encroachments in culturally significant areas such as Batadrava, labeling it a challenge to Assam's heritage and social cohesion.
"This is not merely political. It concerns land, identity, and the survival of the Assamese people," asserted CM Sarma.
As the Assembly elections draw near, he stated that the Congress would be compelled to take a definitive stand on this critical issue.
He accused senior Congress member Gaurav Gogoi of being influenced by social activist Harsh Mander and lawyer Aman Wadud, claiming they are crafting narratives that threaten Assamese identity.
Additionally, he indicated that a publication by Abdul Muhib Mazumder and purportedly edited by Aman Wadud inaccurately suggests that Assamese people arrived in the region later than migrants, a claim CM Sarma deemed historically incorrect and politically perilous.
Wadud is identified as the head of the Congress' social media cell in Assam.
Reaffirming his government's position, CM Sarma stated that the BJP-led administration will continue to address the issue openly and enforce measures to maintain Assam's demographic equilibrium.
"Our duty is to ensure peace, security, and justice for all, while upholding the rights of the indigenous Assamese communities," he added.
Addressing the challenges of illegal immigration and land encroachment is vital for ensuring Assam's long-term stability and social harmony.
