Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 20 (NationPress) On Friday, Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, officially submitted his nomination for the Jalukbari Assembly seat in the forthcoming state elections. The event featured a vibrant roadshow that commenced at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara and concluded at the Kamrup (Metropolitan) Deputy Commissioner’s office in Hengrabari.
This lively procession covered approximately 5.6 km and was attended by Sarma's family, including his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, and their son, Nandil Biswa Sarma. They were joined by Gauhati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, along with numerous BJP leaders and supporters.
Amid a strong show of political backing and under heightened security, Sarma submitted his nomination papers, reinforcing his position in a constituency that has been a significant stronghold for the BJP.
Sarma has represented Jalukbari for over 20 years and is vying for a sixth consecutive term, highlighting his sustained political influence in the area. He first contested from Jalukbari in 1996 but faced defeat against senior Asom Gana Parishad leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan by approximately 17,000 votes. However, he made a notable comeback in 2001, winning by around 10,000 votes.
Since then, Sarma has consistently won the Jalukbari seat, steadily increasing his victory margins throughout the years. In both 2006 and 2011, he secured comfortable wins while representing Congress, establishing himself as a key player in Assam's political landscape.
After joining the BJP in 2015, he contested the 2016 Assembly elections from Jalukbari and achieved a decisive victory, further solidifying his grip on the constituency. In the 2021 elections, Sarma once again held his seat by a significant margin, shortly before taking office as the Chief Minister of Assam.
With a proven electoral history and a deep-rooted connection with local voters, Jalukbari stands as one of the safest constituencies for him as he prepares for yet another electoral challenge.
